What You Need to Know About Medical Marijuana in Illinois

Having the conversation with your doctor

Because the availability of medical marijuana in Illinois is new, doctors may be hesitant to certify it as a form of treatment. However, it is perfectly appropriate to discuss medical cannabis with your doctor – in fact, doctors are used to patients bringing ideas to them about treatment options.

Remember – you are your best advocate and having an open and honest discussion with your doctor about your treatment options is perfectly acceptable.

Your doctor may be unfamiliar with the benefits of medical marijuana. The information here and in the Patient Center and Physician Center with help you both make an informed decision.

Patient Possession Limits

Two and a half ounces of cannabis per 14-day period, however, should that amount not be sufficient to relieve symptoms, your Physician can request a waiver to increase the adequate supply of Medical Cannabis.


Keep in mind the following when talking to your doctor about prescribing medical marijuana:

  • List your symptoms
  • Provide information detailing how medical marijuana has been proven to help your specific condition
  • Understand Illinois requirements and bring required paperwork with you.
